Tags and categories

// November 7th, 2009 // NaBloPoMo

I don’t see the point of categories and tags. How am I supposed to define a post?

In all the posts I’ve done on the Wordpress platform, I’ve never ever used a single tag. On Vox, my tags are just set to “mobile” and “post”, because of the way I crosspost things. I’ve never really sorted them out, but I know I should someday, as Vox doesn’t really allow me to organise my posts in any other way. But when Wordpress already has categories, what is the point of having tags as well?

Sadly, I never know what category anything I blog fits into, nor do I know what to name these categories. What I do know is that I hate “Uncategorized” with a passion. At the moment, I’m sticking everything in my “NaBloPoMo” category to save myself from this horror. But how do I categorise what I write? Does a certain paragraph make it fit into my “Nostalgia” category, or does a word make it fit into “Random”?

What I do know is that I need to get better category names.

I think categories and tags are great for some blogs that write about certain themes (technology, for example), but when I just write whatever comes into my head at the time, it’s difficult to organise my blog posts into topics.

I never really looked at it that way. I usually end up categorizing my blogs into a bunch of different categories and adding about a bajillion tags to make sure I’ve covered everything.

I guess that’s what OCD does to me. ;-)

I understand this wholeheartedly. I never know how to tag my posts. I want to cover everything, but I don’t want to be obsessive. I would just not use them, but (and here’s where I hang my head in shame) I really like the way the tag cloud looks on a blog. I’ve always been a fan of them.

Look forward to reading more!

tags I get and truth be told I’m pretty damn obsessive about using a tag for every single little thing that I mention in my blog but categories… I have no idea…. how are they different from tags, I don’t get it? *shrugs*

I like the idea of tags, but can never bring myself to use them. Or I just forget and am too lazy to go back and add them. I’ve tried to use them more on my flickr page, but haven’t gotten into the routine yet.

My list of categories on my wordpress blog is about a mile long. These days I use mostly mobile there.
I am trying to keep the categories to a minimum on the new blog, but it’s not easy sometimes.
Thanks for giving me spot on your NaBloPoMo blogroll.
I shall be linking to you as soon as I create a blogroll on blog me.

And there was me thinking idly today that I would find it particularly satisfying to go through my old posts and recatagorise them.

You know, to make it more consistent. To gain accuracy.

No, my bookshelves are not obviously alphabeticised. But they are catagorised.

    Oh dear.
